Philips launches Cloud TV with access to hundreds of channels

In a lot of ways, the inside of a 4K Ultra HD TV is a lot like the inside of a high-end computer. The difference is that 4K Ultra HD TVs still have to be quiet, thin and energy conscious. At IFA 2013 , Panasonic showed off a stunning 65-inch Smart VIERA TX-L65WT600, the worlds first Ultra HD TV with a 4K 50/60p input that has HDMI 2.0 and conforms with DisplayPort 1.2a specifications. The TV's specs future-proof the device and ensure it will work with future compatible 4K-players, set-top boxes and next-generation gaming consoles. The TV offers up to 60 frames per second of 4K playback, making the TV an excellent choice for consumers and professionals alike for whom picture quality is imperative.
Source:

Will the fall TV season be less gay?

"And people are always going to have an appetite for that, especially as more of the silly, looser, cheaper stuff is being screened." And much of what is on FKR.TV is silly and loose, but the channel's shows possess the blissed-out levity that comes with artistic freedom, and most contain some real laugh-out-loud moments. Of particular note is one of FKR.TV's newest shows, called "Law of the Land," which was co-created by and stars actress/comedian Ali MacClean as nymphomaniac CIA officer Phoebe Rose Quackenberry. A spoof-a-minute cross between "Homeland" and "24," the debut episode of "Law of the Land" finds Quakenberry trying to foil a Bahamian terrorist plot to bomb the Hatchet Body Spray Factory. PHOTOS: Hollywood Backlot moments As Quackenberry tries to make out with a suspect she is interrogating, he says the Bahamians hate Americans because of their "beer-can hats and fuchsia Crocs, stinking up our beaches with your Hatchet body spray." Another show called "Buyer's Remorse" follows the demonic heartache experienced by a washed-up pop star who buys a house that ends up being haunted a la "American Horror Story." Although FKR.TV is just beginning to spread its wings, Butler and Cross said they have high hopes for what it can accomplish, and believe they can ultimately produce shows on a level with Ben Stiller 's Yahoo Web series "Burning Love," which was nominated for an Emmy and was picked up by E! for a TV run. "It's just a bunch of guys in the office at this point," said Cross, who is curating and soliciting much of the content, mainly from friends. "It is important that our stories get out there and TV is one of the best ways to do that." When NBC's comedy "The New Normal" premiered last fall, it was heralded by the LGBT community for its plot about a gay male couple trying to have a baby. David Wiegand, the San Francisco Chronicle's TV critic, noted that while that show didn't catch on with fans, NBC Entertainment Chairman Bob Greenblatt said at the Television Critics Association summer press tour that he didn't believe the gay characters on the show turned away viewers. Rather, as NBC Entertainment President Jennifer Salke pointed out, audiences are less patient these days in terms of giving a struggling series time to catch on. "The takeaway for all of this is that in 2013, there can be a "New Normal" and it can fail, despite brilliant writing and performances, and there can be a 'Sean Saves the World,' which may fail or catch hold," Wiegand wrote. Kane said there are some bright spots in the upcoming broadcast TV season, including returning LGBT characters on shows like "Glee," the aforementioned "Modern Family" and "Grey's Anatomy." He said there is greater racial diversity among LGBT characters this year, including Aisha Hinds as half of an interracial lesbian couple on CBS' "Under The Dome" and Andre Braugher portraying a gay police captain on Fox's new cop comedy "Brooklyn Nine-Nine" starring "Saturday Night Live" alum Andy Samberg. "There will also be an increase in the role for Alex Newell on 'Glee' where he plays the transgendered student 'Unique' which we're very excited about as 'Unique ' will become the only trans regular on television, if you don't count Netflix," Kane said. GLADD recently put out the Studio Responsibility Index , which found that, with the exception of a handful of movies like "The Perks of Being a Wallflower" and "Pitch Perfect," most big films lack any significant LGBT presence.
Source:

Ad Premium The technology from both Cognitive and Gracenote scans pixels on connected screens almost continuously to determine, for example, what a viewer is watching and where in the program they are. A pizza chain could theoretically ask for an ad insertion at a commercial break to offer 10 percent off to viewers near its shops, and LG could tie in Skype calling so the person never leaves the couch. Proceeds, after the networks share, would be divided between the software companies and TV makers. Because so-called dynamic advertising can be better targeted to the individual, some advertisers are willing to pay a premium of as much as 25 percent above traditional television advertising , according to Ooyala, a Mountain View , California-based company that analyzes video data. While the technology could threaten traditional ads, companies that pursue a multiple-device approach and seek to coexist with existing ad systems have the best chance of success, Gracenotes White said. When you have content and context-aware devices, the reality is you can do a lot more to hyper-target consumers and give them information they care about, White said. It's hard to believe this is something people would be opinionated about. (Kidding.) What Steve Ballmer’s Departure Means For Microsoft In Hollywood

And the company recently announced that old-school gamer Steven Spielberg is now executive producer with Microsofts 343 Industries unit on a live-action Halo TV show . But that show hasnt arrived yet, and theres no guarantee that it ever will, given the franchises track record. Halo is hardly Microsofts only misstep on a Hollywood Trail of Woe. Old-timers will recall Microsofts big 1990s investments in cable set-top boxes that went exactly nowhere and their pricey acquisition of WebTV, which was designed to be your grandmothers TV-based path onto the pre-Bubble Internet. WebTV later became MSN TV, which will shut down September 30, not that anyone, including Grandma, actually noticed.
Source:

Truly, the days of expecting Lee to appear in every movie based on a Marvel character in some increasingly tenuous, distracting manner are definitely over. our editor recommends Stan Lee's Chinese Superhero Project Scores 'Enchanted' Producer Bleeding Cool reports that Lee told fans attending his panel at the convention that he passed up the chance to cameo in next year's X-Men: Days of Future Past to attend the convention -- or, as he apparently put it, to not disappoint the fans -- meaning that next year's X-flick will be the second in a row in which he hasn't made an appearance (he wasn't in this year's The Wolverine either, as the Australia shooting locale was deemed too far to travel). MOVIE REVIEW: 'You're Next' is not for the squeamish

"Holy smokes, Batman!" Adam West is possibly the best known of the Batmen. His campy, over-the-top portrayal of the Worlds Greatest Detective led to the popularity of the 1966 to 1968 Batman television series and the first full-length feature film, "Batman: The Movie" in 1966. Later West would voice the character in "The New Adventures of Batman" and "Super Friends." Twenty years after Adam West's Batman came Michael Keaton in Tim Burton's 1989 "Batman." He played more of a dark, explosive Batman, the opposite of West's goofy type. Keaton's performance received favorable reviews, and he became the first actor to reprise the role in 1992's "Batman Returns" with Danny DeVito Kim Kardashian dad as the Penguin. When the bottom falls out, itas Jasmine whoas left to collect the pieces a which she packs into those bags and carries around with her for the duration of the film. Each scene offers a glimpse of the salvaged debris, sometimes through pitiless flashbacks of Jasmine at her haughty prime, looking down her nose with honest disdain at the little people like some latter-day Marie Antoinette. Other scenes push Jasmine to confront the consequences of her previous life, with her sister sounding out the beats of her money-muted conscience. Jackson says often. And as with the first film, Kick-Ass 2 also goes to some very light, slapsticky places. Itas as if writer/director Jeff Wadlow (working from Mark Millaras graphic novel) wanted to have his cake and blow it up, too. It even dips into philosophical waters, with an interesting though ultimately undeveloped subtext about what it means to be yourself when youare an average citizen by day and a superhero by night. The ego can get a little confused by all the costume changes. Nowhere is this more apparent than in the character of Mindy Macready (ChloA Grace Moretz), now 15 and navigating the world of Millard Fillmore High School.
Read more:

Wadlow's main addition to the story is expanding the attention given to the adventures of Mindy in the land of other young women, grappling with other people's ideas of normal. Among the film's best moments is when young Mindy, trying to fit in, sees a boy-band video for the first time, unleashing a wave of hormonal responses that Moretz captures perfectly. SPECIAL REPORT: The culture of violence in entertainment The adventures of Hit-Girl as a regular person are far more compelling than those of Kick-Ass as a superhero. (Though even her story line is marred by a cheap, unnecessary joke in which a mean girl is made to evacuate her body from both ends at once.) As in the first film, it also doesn't help that as a performer Taylor-Johnson is a charisma-free zone. Wadlow also expands slightly the role of amateur superhero Colonel Stars and Stripes, played by Jim Carrey . The increasingly un-fun actor is a rather poor substitute for the madcap performance of Nicolas Cage in the first film as Hit-Girl's father. Movie Review: Forest Whitaker a Witness to History in ‘The Butler’

While I didn't particularly enjoy enduring The Butler, I get it. Real, explicit, difficult conversations about race occur too infrequently in pop culture. But The Butler mostly fails on this front. Its script, by Danny Strong, is strained and artificial, a historical litany of what its star Oprah Winfrey calls "A-ha Moments" ("That was first time I ever seen a white man stick his neck out for us"), delivered with perpetually hushed reverence. It reminded me of 2004's Crash, in that barely a scene goes by without a forced discussion of race, no matter who's talking (often, it's a president being insensitive as Cecil looks on by with devastating humility). But I get that in order to communicate with stupid people, sometimes you gotta get stupid yourself.
Source:

In case you forgot after all, its been 15 years since she last appeared in a live-action film as someone other than herself Oprah can, indeed, act. Lets also not forget that she was nominated for an Oscar in 1986 for her work in The Color Purple, and it certainly doesnt hurt this film that that the majority of her scenes are with fellow Oscar-nominee Terrence Howard and Oscar-winner Whitaker. While we see the civil rights movement through the lens of the White House, the brutality and humanity of it all is brought to life through Cecils son, Louis, played by David Oyelowo, who is always a treat to watch. Louis becomes a Freedom Rider and then a Black Panther. His choices do not sit well with Cecil, who has worked hard to give his son a decent life and the ability to go to college. Hes dumbfounded when Louis decides to attend a university down South, at the time a hotbed of racist activity. Daniels renders moments of the civil rights movement in ways we havent seen before.
Source:
